Ramp to the left leg

By Norm Seeley | October 26, 2008

I told you yesterday, 10/25, that the ramp in our wheelchair van has stopped working correctly.  Wife Karen suggested that I be there and stop it from making such a loud noise each time it’s lowered so that she can get in or out of the van.  Not a bad idea, so rather than me sitting in the drivers seat as usual when I lowered the ramp or using the remote control from afar.  I decided that I would stand on the passenger side as the door slid open and the ramp came down.  As we got into the van this morning, there I was.  Opened the door, and put a bungie cord on the end of the ramp.  I had stopped the motion while doing this.  I pushed the control, thinking that I was standing far enough away for the ramp to lower and for me to slow it’s fall to the ground.  WRONG…I was an inch too close and the ramp hit my left leg with all it’s force.  IT HURT.  But, it was almost silent as it struck my leg.  I made up for it with a yell of OUCH!!!!!

I am a quick learner.  The ramp did not hit me again the three additional times I had to lower it so far today.  As for my leg, by tomorrow there’s going to be one big bruise.   A Badge of Courage???

Here is the ramp in the down position.  Just think about it coming down, full force and hitting your leg.  OUCH!

Great Timing!

By Norm Seeley | October 25, 2008

Coming off of such a great week last week, celebrating  wife Karen’s birthday, I had been drawn into the feeling that every thing was going to continue to be wonderful.

Up until Wednesday.  Coming out from Lunch, I pushed the button to lower the ramp on our wheelchair van.  The door slid back.  The ramp lowered, and reached about three quarters of the way down.  Then dropped with a THUD.  Not just a simple thud, that Karen and I could hear, but one that echoed in the parking lot.  I didn’t think that much of it, a little surprised but those things happen every once in a while.

Karen rolled up the ramp in her wheelchair, and into her Easy-Lock device.  I, by now sitting in the drivers’ seat pushed the button on the van dash to lift up the ramp and close the door.  The ramp raised about two inches off the pavement and then started dropping and raising, dropping and raising, dropping and raising, and making such a horrible noise neither of us could think.  Especially me who had to think to push the button and stop it.  That I finally did.  It was obvious that I would have to get out, go around to the passenger side and manually lift the ramp into the van.  It’s easy to do, but does take a little muscle. I still have some.

Yesterday we went to a nearby Wheelchair Van sales and service center that we have used once in a while over the past few years.  It’s close to the house and was on the way back from the restaurant.  We had them look at the ramp.  It’s a gear arrangement and it needs to be replaced.  Cost…..over $700.00.  But that will have to be confirmed on Monday, as the parts book they had was two years old.

No question what I will be thinking about the rest of the weekend.  Ain’t we got fun!!

My Habits.

By Norm Seeley | October 24, 2008

One of the things I loved to do when I was single was purchase watches.

To me, it was important to have a different watch for every day.  This started while I was working all nights at KBTR Radio up in Denver.

If you click on the KBTR listing above, the newspaper article and the two surveys came from my limited collection many years ago.

Think about what I was doing and when I was doing it hosting an all night radio program.

There I was, Norm Seeley,  an all night Disc Jockey on an AM Radio station playing rock music.

KBTR was affiliated with KBTV with it’s radio studios in the basement in downtown Denver, close to the state capital, and I was all alone.

There were TV engineers in the building till about 2 AM, but not much later than that.   The morning radio crew didn’t come in until maybe 5 AM, at least the newsman, so I had a few hours, every night all to myself with the  “stacks of wax” and the Microphone.

Now, not only did I want to have a watch for every day.  Back in the 60s, there wasn’t such a thing as replica watches, I purchase the real things, and I always wore a suit and tie.  There I was, alone, no one else in the building dressed in a suit and wearing a tie and announcing the titles of the songs, reading the news, and of course giving out the time and temperature in the capital city of Colorado.

I’m sure the suits, ties, and different watches daily made me sound better on the air.

Home to me.

By Norm Seeley | October 23, 2008

Home to me doesn’t have to be fancy.  Simple is best.  And I don’t need a big house.

I don’t need a house with 6 bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms.  One master bedroom and bath and maybe one additional bathroom, (that’s what we have now) is more than adequate.

It also (don’t tell anyone I said this) keeps down the number of guests who visit.  As it is right now, the house, our house has only one bed, a California King, and a fold down couch in the living room.  I have a long standing rule, “Only share your bed with one person.”  And being a happily married man, my wife gets that spot.

All the walls through out the house are white.  That too is fine with me.  However we have talked about having the walls in the different rooms painted different colors.  I wouldn’t have a problem with that.  Not at all.  There is no question it would perk things up.

As I’m typing this blog, it came to mind that one thing I would really like would be a system, built in, automatic and quiet, that would clean the floors, dust the furniture, empty the garbage, while Karen and I were asleep.  Every Day.  When we were out of the master bedroom, during the day,  it would take care of it.  And if it would also make the bed, I would not complain one little bit.  No Sir!

We have installed blinds on all of the windows to close at night, so that people can’t watch us after the Arizona sun goes down.  They are simple manual blinds and they work very well.   Now if we were to upgrade, I would certainly consider bamboo blinds , to make the windows look more decorative.  I know Karen would go for that.

When you think about important things for a house, at least here in Arizona, the first thing that jumps   into one’s mind is, that’s right Air Conditioning.

That has got to be the first thing to consider at least to me, and I’m Norm Seeley.

What’s next?

By Norm Seeley | October 23, 2008

As we started to leave the house this afternoon we were talking to a neighbor who noticed that there was a nail in the left rear tire of our van.

Karen and I drove to a restaurant, that was near where she needed to be to meet with a friend of hers, had lunch, then I took the van to the tire place.

Told them what was wrong and an hour and fifteen minutes later, the nail was gone, and all the tire pressure in the other 3 tires had been checked and I was set to return to pick up Karen.

The tire place was not far at all from where Karen was.  I bet, if she looked out the front window she could have seen our van sitting outside for 45 minutes before they started working on it.  Not a problem for me, I feel asleep in the waiting room.  I’m good at that.

While sitting there, before I dozed off, I noticed another man who was attempting to do some work while his vehicle was being worked on.  (New tires, tire rotation, balance or something like that)  I thought it was kind of funny,  He asked an employee for office supplies , then he sat down near to me and started working.

Luckily for me, even with him working nearby, he was not a bit noisy so he did not bother me as I dozed.

Look up in the Sky!

The picture above is from my friend Kris up in Colorado who went to Albuquerque, New Mexico for the Balloon Fiesta.  She said she took hundreds of pictures.  I can see why.

Five more payments.

By Norm Seeley | October 23, 2008

At lunch yesterday, Karen and I were talking and she was reminding me of a shopping center location that I seemed to have forgotten where it was.

She is going there this afternoon to have coffee with a friend.  They are going to a place that puts very good use to it’s  espresso machines .

Karen reminded me that where she was going was the same place where shortly after we were married, two young girls came up to me outside of a store and Asked me, “Is she yours?”

Without missing a beat, I answered,” Yes, in 5 more payments she’ll be fully paid for.”

Vaguely I remember that they must not have understood what I was saying or even that I was joking.   One of the girls responded with, “OH she’s so pretty.”

Folks out there in blog land, I didn’t need them to tell me about that.

The very first picture I saw of Karen had me thinking that same thing,  within a second of receiving the picture on my computer.   “WOW, She Is CUTE!!”, I said to myself.

I know that the minute I saw what Karen looked like, the man in me said, I need to get to know this lady.  Those first thoughts were not wrong.  Our relationship, marriage has turned out even better than I had dreamed.  That’s an entirely different story that I might tell you about in another blog in the future.

For now, that’s all from Scottsdale, I’m Norm Seeley, blogging.

Skimpy.

By Norm Seeley | October 22, 2008

Once again here I am to blog with you for a minute or two.   It’s down hill toward the weekend, and that is always a good news, as the weekend seem to be easier to take and that is always exciting.

As you know, there are days that I carry with me a camera and take pictures, either of places, or people or anything I want.  It was last Saturday while at a party for my dear wife that I noticed a lady near by and thought, “there would be an interesting picture.”

So that’s what I did.  Snapped a couple.

It wasn’t until I got home, and loaded them into the computer that I realized she was really wearing a skimpy outfit.  At least she doesn’t have to worry about acne treatment.

I don’t think she liked my snapping a picture or two.

Here in Scottsdale

By Norm Seeley | October 21, 2008

October 21, and here I am in Scottsdale, Arizona.  I have been here since the early 60s off and on with time spent in Florida and Nevada.  Now that I think about it, there was a time in California too.  It was very short when you consider things, and really don’t remember much about being there other than maybe the apartment complex I lived in.  Please don’t press for details, my pea brain would be taxed  to the max.

What have I been doing today, secret stuff.  Only available on a need to know basis.  Have to have high security clearance for me to let you in on it.  That leaves out Obama and Biden.  ( Political Dig).  Have to get those in now, cause if the worst happens in two short weeks, free speech will be a thing of the past.  (There I go again, speaking the truth.   No, I’m not ashamed….in fact I like doing it.  Let’s hope and pray it doesn’t disappear.
