Great Timing!
By Norm Seeley | October 25, 2008
Coming off of such a great week last week, celebrating wife Karen’s birthday, I had been drawn into the feeling that every thing was going to continue to be wonderful.
Up until Wednesday. Coming out from Lunch, I pushed the button to lower the ramp on our wheelchair van. The door slid back. The ramp lowered, and reached about three quarters of the way down. Then dropped with a THUD. Not just a simple thud, that Karen and I could hear, but one that echoed in the parking lot. I didn’t think that much of it, a little surprised but those things happen every once in a while.

Karen rolled up the ramp in her wheelchair, and into her Easy-Lock device. I, by now sitting in the drivers’ seat pushed the button on the van dash to lift up the ramp and close the door. The ramp raised about two inches off the pavement and then started dropping and raising, dropping and raising, dropping and raising, and making such a horrible noise neither of us could think. Especially me who had to think to push the button and stop it. That I finally did. It was obvious that I would have to get out, go around to the passenger side and manually lift the ramp into the van. It’s easy to do, but does take a little muscle. I still have some.
Yesterday we went to a nearby Wheelchair Van sales and service center that we have used once in a while over the past few years. It’s close to the house and was on the way back from the restaurant. We had them look at the ramp. It’s a gear arrangement and it needs to be replaced. Cost…..over $700.00. But that will have to be confirmed on Monday, as the parts book they had was two years old.
No question what I will be thinking about the rest of the weekend. Ain’t we got fun!!
