Highway Safety?
By Norm Seeley | July 31, 2008
On the 101 freeway, that is just a short distance from our house here in Scottsdale, the city of Scottsdale has been conducting a test of photo “speed’ cameras. Well, that test is over and now the state is moving in with newly purchased mobile photo equipment to capture speeders.
In preparation for the new speed enforcement, the state has lowered the speed limit on the 101 to 55 MPH. Keep in mind that for the last several months the 101 has been a major construction area and the limit has been dropped in the construction zones. But that in itself has not slowed Arizona Drivers down at all.
We use the 101, as it’s quicker than traveling on Scottsdale streets with all of the lights.
Even with the lower speed limits in the miles of construction, have to tell you again, most drivers don’t slow down at all. Just yesterday with the new posted 55 MPH signs up, I was going 60 MPH, and being pasted by 90% of the other vehicles who had to be doing 70 or faster.
During the speed camera tests, every week or so there would be a picture in one of the local papers showing a driver and his/her vehicle on the 101 at 79, 85, or even 95 MPH.
Those cameras did not do a thing, to ” Improve the safety of the 101″ Like the city of Scottsdale told us it would and what it was for.
Sure.
The fact that it brought in revenue had nothing at all to do with it.
NO, not a bit.
Anyway, it’s funny that the state now, has lowered the limit, just before they are to start using the mobile photo equipment. Could it be that they’re trying to sucker Arizona Drivers or start off with a big income based on this new limit.
What they should really do is for each person caught driving faster than the limit, they should make them purchase strollers , turn in their BMW’s and Hummers.
Now that would help “Highway Safety”!!

Notice how speed cameras tend to be setup in affluent areas?
Personally, I don’t have a problem with speed cameras per se as an enforcement mechanism, but the end game to this is continual monitoring of all drivers. The people need to start asserting opposition to this kind of monitoring or we’ll end up like the UK. I suggest the line should be drawn at red light cameras.
Also, its been obvious to me that since the speed cameras have been installed on the 101, the DPS presence has been considerably reduced, meaning that offenses other than speeding are not deterred.

Speed Cameras don’t bother me either. But the truth is they’re there to create revenue. That’s all. Safety, although that’s what are leaders say they are installed for, is so far down the list, it would make your head swim.
You’re right about less DPS presence being down. Maybe the HP needs to call up some of the older, reserve officers….Hint…Hint…..
Thanks for the comment.
