Friday’s Music

For

May 30, 2008

I was reminded this week that I was only 19 years old when I worked at KIMN in Denver. While I attended the University of Denver, I would work Friday nights 6PM to Midnight, Saturday mornings working news then back 6 to Midnight as a Disc Jockey and Sunday morning from 8AM to 12 noon. Part of that time I was just in the building while others ran shows of a religious nature. Part of the time on Friday nights, I played music while a DJ broadcast from a remote location. it was also me who you would hear reporting the news at the top of each hour. But for the most part I more or less acted like an engineer while the remote was on the air. . The rest of the time Friday, I did it all, was the DJ and did the news.

Back in those days, most of the equipment used tubes. For example in the Control Room, that’s where I would work from, there were a couple of turntables, some cart decks for jingles and commercials and two large audio racks sitting right behind the DJ position. Both were over 6 feet tall and filled from top to bottom with equipment.

At one point the building that KIMN was in next to Sloans Lake housed the transmitter. But it had been moved before I went to work there and was remotely controlled during the day. At night, there was actually an engineer at the transmitter building taking meter readings every half hour. The area where the transmitter had been was just an open empty space and nothing was ever put there during the couple years I was employed.

19 years old.

That was a long time ago.

Memories.
