Here’s how it’s Done.

THEN

Two Turntables DJ(me) Console Third Turntable.
NOW.
Mixer – Microphone(from Vegas) - Computer Screen
When I started in broadcasting in the early 60s, the “control room” at a radio station had a Console, a microphone, and at least two to four turntables. The stations I started on, played music and that’s how they got it on the air.
When CDs came along, the turntables were replaced by CD decks but the routine remained the same.
A DJ would announce the songs, push a button and the turntable or CD would start and the music was on the air. All of course in “Real Time.”
When I do Friday’s Music, I never hear the complete song until I listen to the completed show. I “rip” the music from CDs, load them into my computer, which is done electronically so it’s not in “Real Time” It might be half. Write a very short script, which I then also record into the computer. If while recording the “inserts”, that’s what I call the voice part of the pgm that I do, I make a mistake, I don’t stop the recording but I pause, back up a sentence and start reading again and I have now re-done the area of the mistake. When done with the insert I go back and if there is a mistake, I can look at the “waveform” and cut any mistakes out. It’s really very simple and 99.9% of the time, you can’t even hear the edit. When I have all the inserts needed I mix them with the music.
It’s then converted to an MP3 file and uploaded on to the blog site and you can then listen. The next Friday’s Music is tomorrow and it now expanded to include 10 songs rather than 5. Take a listen.
