Her Screams woke me! #1
By Norm Seeley | March 31, 2007
Thursday afternoon, just after 5 PM I dozed off while watching the local news. Karen’s screams woke me. Her office is only a few steps from where I was. I followed her screams.
Karen was slumped over in her chair still screaming. I was standing next to her and now could see that she had been trapped under her desk by her power chair that was still pushing her crossed leg up under the desk. The desk was up, off the floor by 2 to 3 inches and the weight was squarely on her leg. Her power chair was off now, as the on/off button, located at the front of the control, was under the desk and it had shut it down with the pressure from the desk, after the desk itself had slipped on to the control handle forcing it back and up, thus forcing Karen’s legs into the bottom of the desk. I put my right arm under the desk as far as it would go, and in one motion lifted the desk, with the two monitors, and computer straight up, releasing Karen’s legs from under the desk. With my left hand, I reached over and turned the chair back on and quickly backed her out from under the desk. Only then could I let the desk down to the floor. It came down with a bang.
Karen doesn’t do well out of her chair, a ride in an ambulance would not have worked at all, so now our thoughts turned to getting her to the hospital in the chair as quickly as possible in our van which will carry her and her chair.
