Help! I have fallen…..
By Norm Seeley | July 2, 2006
A little over an hour ago, I decided that I was going to replace the ceiling fan in our bedroom. It’s one of those fans, that no matter what you do to it, or who does it, it wobbles from the slowest to the highest speed. At it’s highest speed, you almost feel like you are in a room full of Democrats as that fan is flipping and flopping so fast, it’s unsafe for any one who loves life to be in there with it.
Now this just didn’t happen over night, in fact, it started doing it about two years ago. I’m one of those people who if there isn’t someone there to fix it, who really knows what they are doing, I fix it by not using it. And that’s what I have done. Two years and it hasn’t wobbled a bit. Course it hasn’t been turned on either.
On with today’s story. Yesterday, after the temperature dropped below 110, I decided we’d go to Home Depot, as it was having a sale on ceiling fans. The Wife and I, went there, and quickly found a fan that was less than $100.00 that filled the bill. We took it and were home in less that 40 minutes. That has got to be a Home Depot Shopping Record. After coming home, I was clear even though we had a new fan, it was not going to be installed last night.
Today was the big day. Follow church and lunch, I tackled the task of taking down the fan already there and then was going to put up the new one. Got a ladder and some screw drivers and got the old fan ready to come down from the ceiling, but I couldn’t quite get it to come off the mounting bracket….. I turned my head to look down, (house has 9 foot ceilings) and it was me that was coming down. Don’t ask why. Don’t ask how. I fell. I fell striking the dresser and knocking everything on top to the floor. I too went to the floor with a thud. No, let’s make that a very big hard 6’4″ THUD! I don’t know if I yelled or just ughed as I crashed on the floor but Karen was there in the hall looking down at me on the floor between the dresser and the bed, surrounded by the contents that had been on the top of the dresser all around me. I know I must have been moaning, and moaning, as I am a moaner when I hurt. Or think that I am hurt.
My pride was hurt, but surprising, nothing else. Now I am sore. But I didn’t break anything. That’s a good thing because…..
When I unhooked the fan, I first turned off the AC at the breaker in the back. Then unhooked the wires in the ceiling box. By doing that, I have unhooked the power in that bedroom and the front bedroom that I use as an office and all of the AC there for the ceiling lamp/Fan and two plugs, the hallway light was disconnected. No power no phone as the Base for the cordless phones is in that front office. All of the wiring goes through that ceiling box in the “Master Bedroom”. Considering this house was built 40 years ago, I am surprised that that is all it effected. Maybe we’ll find something else out, later. If I had been hurt, Karen wouldn’t have been able to make a call to 911 or even across the street.
The old fan is down and now in the trash. The new fan, still in it’s box is in the living room and will stay there until we get the electric system in the bedrooms revised and working again.
Good Idea, just bad wiring. Oh yes I think I will find someone who likes to hang fans, I don’t think it’s fun anymore.

I can atest to the fact that you did yell when you fell and there was a big crashing sound that I heard from the other end of the house.

Yelling is good. So is moaning…
If it’s the right time.

Come to think of it, there was a loud crash and of lot of yelling and moaning heard between 2 & 2:30 here in San Diego. I thought it was thunder but no clouds were in sight so must have been Norm.
Glad only your pride was hurt – you might feel different today.

Pride still hurt. Body is doing pretty good.
My left hip is sore to the touch, but other than that can’t complain.
Still with no power in the bedrooms. Did have a second plug put in when we added the video editor so by switching cords, we have some lights and computers up adn working.
Where would one be without extension cords?
